What Are They?

Widgets are small stand-alone applications embedded and executed
within a web page. Widgets look and act like traditional desktop
applications but are implemented using web technologies, often used
for on-screen tools of various description:

Widgets are typically created using JavaScript, Flash, HTML, and CSS.

Also known as: portlet, gadget, badge, module, webjit, capsule, snippet,
mini and flake.
